February 23rd, 2008 by ParentZone Marshall Wrestling Fans: Yes, Andy looked very good wining his first-round match against the number two seed from the Central District. He then lost in the quarter finals at 6:30 on Friday and lost again around 9:30 in the consolation bracket against wrestlers from the Northwest Region. In his first match, Andy was ahead 6-2 in the third period and comfortably controlling his opponent. Then things turned Bad (with a capital B). I'll omit the editorializing … the facts will speak for themselves: During an out of bounds stoppage, the opponent was ruled to have engaged in unsportsmanlike conduct and the referee awarded Andy an extra point. When wrestling resumed, the opponent was penalized for eye gouging (two more points). As you can imagine, Andy was in a tremendous amount of pain and discomfort. He wanted to finish wrestling but the trainer declared Andy medically unable to continue and the match was stopped. So Andy won the match by disqualification; the official score was 9-1. Because Andy was medically unable to continue, we had to take him to a clinic to be cleared by a doctor so he could wrestle in the quarterfinals. That process took about 1-1/2 hours, but we got him back to the school well before the 6:30 quarterfinal round. Many thanks to everyone who supported Andy through his run in the regional tournament and here at states. I was especially pleased to see how many folks came to watch him in the regionals on the final day, including last year's wrestlers Adam Fisher and Raffi Teperdjian. |

02/17/07 - Marshall Pride MARSHALL AT DISTRICTS AND REGIONALS -- Congratulations to all the Statesmen wrestlers who put everything they had on the line at the Liberty District Championships (hosted here at Marshall High School!) on Feb 9 and 10, and at the Northern Virginia Regional Championships, held at Centreville this year, on Feb 16 and 17. -- At Districts, our Statesmen earned top-four finishes in eight different weight classes, with Raffi Teperdjian coming out on top as District Champion at 135! All eight of those wrestlers, of course, qualified for Regionals. -- At Regionals, Adam Fisher earned a top-six place in the 152 pound weight class, while Raffi's hopes for Regional honors were cut short when he faced Robinson's Reid Brown (the eventual Regional runner-up) early in the quarterfinals and lost on a razor-thin 6-5 decision. Kent Morimoto, wrestling at 103, was the third of three Statesmen to make it to the quarters. Kent was stopped by Robinson's Roman Perryman, who ended up winning the 103 pound weight class. -- Here are the wrestlers who placed at Districts, and how each did at Regionals: 103 - Kent Morimoto, 3rd Liberty, QTRS Region 112 - Andy O'Meara, 3rd Liberty 119 - Shane Mills, SEMIS Liberty, Round16 Region 130 - Sam Mencarini, 2nd Liberty, Round16 Region 135 - Raffi Teperdjian, 1st Liberty, QTRS Region 145 - Adam Fisher, 3rd Liberty, 6th Region 160 - Craig Murphy, 4th Liberty, Round16 Region 189 - Aaron Waldrop, 4th Liberty, Round16 Region 215 - Andrew Embree, 4th Liberty, Round16 Region -- Again, congratulations Statesmen. 07/21/06 - Marshall Wrestling Web Site NEWSLETTER -- Car Wash Fundraiser - will be held this Saturday, July 22, at the same Exxon on Courthouse/Gallows/123. Wrestlers will be solo (no dance team) - so we will need to have enough workers to cover the actual labor of washing while others "bring in the customers." We will need folks to bring the same equipment: hoses, spayers, towels (lots of them), buckets, soap for car wash and large sponges for washing. The past two events were quite successful so Coach has his eyes on a fruitful day! Please respond back if you will be able to make it. I believe the time is 9:30 to 4 (but check to confirm). -- Conditioning - Each Monday and Thursday evening there is a multi-team conditioning program held at Marshall from 6-8. It's run by the football team, but anyone is invited. The night is divided into three sections - lifting, endurance and agility. Coach encourages participation. I need to check but this may end when football practice begins - (August 8) - but I will get back to you on that. -- Camp reports - Good turnout, good learning, and most enjoyed by Coach is a comment he got from someone associated with the camp commenting that he "hardly noticed the team was at the camp because they were all so well behaved!" All the parents should be proud of the guys ... (I wonder if there are little stories that will go down as legend from the "behind the scenes" memories that are made a an overnight sports camp!) -- Wrestling Camp - 1 more! - Week of July 31st - there is a 3 hour camp at Annandale from 5-8. Cost is $100. George Mason coaches and wrestlers will be present as well as a Grandby System Coach. It is encouraged for our wrestlers to participate if their schedule allows - especially for those who weren't able to go to the Hampden-Sydney - Grandby Camp. Information can be found at http://www.wrestle2win.zoomshare.com/ -- New coaches - Coach Planakis has announced two new coaches that will be joining the team - Coach Christopher Ward and Coach Paul Green. More info coming soon on this! -- GCM Parent Support Team - We are looking to organize our efforts towards support of the team this coming year. We will be getting more out on this in follow up emails - but if you are willing to take the lead on one of the committee/projects, let me know. |
